Coach Schaffer

Bob’s passion for cross country and track first began as a competitor from 1972 – 1981 and has continued on as a coach.

Bob started his competitive career at Lyon Township High School in LaGrange, IL where he ran varsity cross country and track for 4 years.  During his high school career he achieved All-American honors as part of a 4×800 relay team which broke the national high school record.  He predominately competed in the 800 (it was 880 yards back then) and his best high school time was 1:53.2.  He also competed on the 4×400 and 4×200 relay teams which finished 2nd and 4th respectively in the State Championship.

He then went on to compete at the collegiate level for Indiana University.  While at Indiana Bob was a member of the varsity track team for 4 years and also trained with the cross country team.  His best times at Indiana were 1.51.0 for the 800 meters and 4:03.7 for the mile.

Bob has been an Assistant Cross Country and Track Coach at Vanguard since 2009.  Prior to his position at Vanguard he had five years of coaching experience as the Head Track and Cross Country Coach for the Blazers of Mid-Florida (an AAU track club).  During his tenure with the Blazers Bob coached athletes who achieved 3 state AAU championships had 16 athletes qualified for the Junior Olympics.   If you ask Bob he will tell you coaching both cross country and track is the most rewarding part of his day.  Being able to assist athlete’s progress in both ability and self-confidence throughout their high school careers is what makes it all worthwhile.   Bob is honored to be a part of the great program Coach Travieso has built at Vanguard and looks forward to continuing in that effort.

Bob is married to Patricia (P.G.) and their daughter Ellie graduated from Vanguard in 2011.  Their son David, who is also a runner at Vanguard, will graduate in 2013.
